Why 6,400 IU? That seems like a lot.

It does sound high compared to the standard adult recommendation of 600–800 IU/day — but that recommendation is for maintaining general health in non-pregnant, non-lactating adults. Research published in Pediatrics (Hollis et al., 2015) found that 6,400 IU/day is the dose required to reliably enrich breast milk to levels sufficient for infant needs. Lower doses simply don't transfer enough vitamin D into milk. This dose has been studied specifically in breastfeeding mothers and found to be safe and effective.

Is 6,400 IU safe for me as a breastfeeding mother?

Yes, when used under healthcare provider guidance. The NIH tolerable upper intake level for adults is 4,000 IU/day for the general population, but higher doses have been studied in lactating women without adverse effects. Vitamin D toxicity (hypervitaminosis D) is rare and typically associated with doses well above 10,000 IU/day taken over extended periods. We recommend baseline and follow-up serum 25(OH)D testing with your provider to ensure your levels stay in the optimal range (40–80 ng/mL).

Can I take Sunlatched alongside my prenatal vitamin?

Most prenatal vitamins contain 400–1,000 IU of vitamin D. Since Sunlatched provides 6,400 IU, you should discuss the combined total with your healthcare provider before starting. In most cases, the amount in a prenatal is small enough that the combination is appropriate, but your provider can confirm based on your individual labs and health history.

What if I accidentally take more than one capsule?

The Hollis et al. study found that infants of mothers taking 6,400 IU/day had vitamin D status equivalent to infants receiving direct supplementation of 400 IU/day. However, this decision should be made with your healthcare provider. Your provider may want to monitor your baby's vitamin D levels, especially in the early weeks, before discontinuing drops.

How long does it take for the vitamin D to appear in my breast milk?

Vitamin D begins transferring into breast milk relatively quickly after supplementation begins — typically within a few days of consistent daily use. However, it takes several weeks of consistent supplementation to fully optimize your serum 25(OH)D levels and, in turn, your milk's vitamin D content. This is why consistent daily use and follow-up testing with your provider are important.

What if I'm only partially breastfeeding or supplementing with formula?

If your baby receives a significant portion of their nutrition from formula (which is already fortified with vitamin D), the calculus changes. Discuss with your provider whether Sunlatched alone is sufficient or whether your baby may still benefit from drops given their formula intake. Sunlatched is designed primarily for exclusively or predominantly breastfeeding mothers.
